Therapeutic Diets That Influence Cancer Metabolism
Cancer is fundamentally a chronic metabolic illness that can be can be powerfully influenced by specific dietary interventions. Which foods and dietary guidelines should you recommend to cancer patients and cancer survivors? What are the criteria for selecting the most appropriate therapeutic diet for each unique patient? There is a great deal of controversy about which diets and foods should and should not be recommended to cancer patients and cancer survivors. We will review the science behind dietary approaches that influence cancer metabolism including Ketogenic, Low Carbohydrate, Methionine Restricted, Raw vs Cooked, Vegan vs Paleo, Fasting and Calorie Restriction and discuss how to maintain calorie and nutrient repletion during cancer treatments to meet unique nutrient needs of patients with cachexia, sarcopenia, ostomies and changes in immune, metabolic and gastrointestinal function.
